The kiss, original title "The Couple of Lovers", is one of the important works of Gustav Klimt and also the painting of Art Nouveau. It is also considered the most famous painting of the painter, as it has been widely used by reproductions in many forms. Klimt painted the picture in the first half of 1908 and completed it in 1909, a time called Klimt Golden Phase and from which his most popular works originated. It was acquired in the Kunstschau Vienna in 1908 by the then imperial royal ministry of culture and teaching (minister was Gustav Marchet) for the high sum of 25,000 crowns and was set up in the summer castle of Prince Eugen of Savoy on the race path in 1903.
